TRIP UPDATE: We’re in Africa!… but where exactly?

Posted on January 27th, 2014 by BreAnn

Just to catch you up to speed quick, here is a photo of the vehicle we are being carted around in RIGHT at this VERY moment (and have been since January 20th):

Yep, it’s a TRUCK!… not a bus.

And here are our new friends we are currently traveling with:

So… it’s true: For the FIRST time on our round-the-world trip, we have joined an actual organized tour for 20 days through Africa. OK, so I guess if I really think about it, we DID join a tour before…. Remember that horrible and disastrous three-day Vietnam-to-Cambodia tour we took back in June? We like to pretend that one didn’t even happen 🙂  Anyway, so this tour company is called “G Adventures” (formerly Gap Adventures) and is a HUGE company that organizes tours literally all over the world (including Antarctica!) Our particular itinerary starts in Nairobi, Kenya, travels through the Serengeti National Park and Ngorongoro Crater in Tanzania (for safari game drives!!), goes down through Marangu and Dar es Salaam in Tanzania, then to Zanzibar (Island), next through Iringa (still in Tanzania), down through Malawi (country) to Senga Bay and Chipata, through Lusaka in Zambia, and ends in Livingstone, Zambia at the amazing Victoria Falls!

Yep, we are actually CAMPING for 20 days all through Africa on our tour! But sunrises like this aren’t so bad! 😉

We have been joined by approximately 20 other people from around the world!… but most of them are from Europe.  I would say the average age of the group, overall, is around 23 to 33 or so, with a few girls in their early twenties, and a few guys in their late thirties to forties… so it’s a good age group for us. Also, might we note: this is a CAMPING tour. So we actually have to set up a tent every night, sleep with sleeping bags and mats, and are literally out there in the African wilderness!  At first, we were a bit hesitant about booking a camping tour instead of spending nights in hotels, but Africa is EXPENSIVE!!… and this camping tour alone is actually way over budget in the first place, so a hotels tour would be completely overpriced for us! BUT, in the end, I have to say it really isn’t all that bad to be camping on this tour… the sleeping mats make it very comfortable, the temperature hasn’t really been too hot or too cold, and so far we haven’t gotten too many mosquito bites. PLUS… can anybody you know say they camped OUT IN THE WILD in the Serengeti and had ELEPHANTS AND HYENAS roaming through camp (right next to all the tents) at night!??   How incredibly crazy, right??  More on that in a future post…

For now, we are currently in Zanzibar, Tanzania, and 7 days into the tour and have been having a great time so far, and have met many new fun friends.

More updates and blog posts about our experiences all over Africa soon to come!
